From the 1780s on, the area that is now Lawndale was part of Rancho Sausal Redondo, a land grant given by the Spanish colonial government, which included much of what is now the South Bay region.2 In 1905 Charles B Hopper had first subdivided the area and named it after a Chicago suburb.
